PEX supply pipe is the biggest revolution in plumbing since the flush toilet, and in this article we’ll answer the most common questions homeowners have about it and also give you some tips for working with it.

A lesson on your home plumbing system – how it is set up and how it works. Step 1 drill through sud and sill plate Drill Through the Stud and Sill Plate Place the bit up to the stud and slowly start the drill, allowing it to build up speed. Drill through the sill plate and sub-floor for each water line. When drilling through a stud, be sure that each hole is at the same level so the pipe runs parallel to the floor.

Step 2 use nail plate as added precaution Run the Water Lines Once the holes are drilled, start running the water lines. In most cases, the lines will come through the floor. In some cases, the lines will have to be run across the wall studs. When running the pipes through the studs, first be sure to drill the holes in the center so that when it’s time to hang the wall board, the screws or nails don’t reach the pipes and damage the pipes.

Take this extra precaution — Ed recommends using a nail plate. The nail plate has tacks on both ends of a flat piece of steel.

Bathrooms Plumbing an entire bathroom may seem like a big project and in some cases it is. Running all the waste and water lines through floor joists and walls can take some planning and trial and error. That’s the hard part of plumbing a bathroom and it’s different for each project. Take some extra time to draw out your plans to make sure you’ll be running lines the best way possible.

Once you’ve run the waste and water lines, the rest of the job involves getting all the fixtures in place and hooking them up. Setting Toilets Most toilets are assembled in two pieces: Setting both pieces as one unit can be awkward and heavy. If possible, install the bowl first, then the tank. The fitting that connects the toilet to the waste pipe is the closet flange.

Almost all new plumbing pipes used today to replace old, rusty, and galvanized pipes are either Copper pipes or PEX pipes. Many homeowners do not know what Copper or PEX piping consists of, what each looks like, the cost of each, the benefits of each, and the drawbacks of each, until they are faced with a situation where they need to repipe a bathroom or often the whole plumbing system in their house.

My goal is to provide enough information pertaining to Copper and PEX piping to ensure anyone done reading this post will have a fairly good idea of their options and can think about which one will meet their need the best. We do have specific pages on our site pertaining to PEX Piping and Copper Piping with all the details regarding each type of plumbing pipe, so if you have the time, please check those out to obtain further knowledge.

I will start out by explaining a bit about PEX plumbing pipes, then move to copper plumbing pipes and end with some thoughts on the two and scenarios and reasons as to why you would pick one over the other. You will notice that PEX piping is a very colorful and flexible material. Plumbing with PEX Pipes Besides being colorful and flexible, PEX pipes are also very durable, there is less chance of future leaks, they are quieter, resistant to extreme high and low temperatures, efficient, provide fast flowing water, can reduce your utility bills, are environmentally friendly, and last a lifetime!

How could I have forgotten to mention…. Plumbing with PEX piping is also cost effective! Two reasons why Plumbing with PEX is cheaper than plumbing with copper is that the material is cheaper and it requires a lot less effort from Plumbers to implement a new plumbing system using PEX pipes. PEX fittings are utilized to make connections from PEX tubing to PEX tubing, PEX tubing to manifolds, PEX tubing to copper, PEX tubing to faucets & fixtures, and a variety of other applications. Fittings are commonly made of brass but are also available in plastic, bronze, and even stainless steel.

First, you can usually make long continuous runs, eliminating most elbows and joints. You can snake long runs through joists and studs. Second, PEX doesn’t sweat under high humidity conditions, and it’s also resistant to bursting, even if the lines freeze solid. Third, joints are easier. You add fittings simply by crimping metal rings over barbed fittings using a special crimping tool.

It is very important that you know which brand of pipes you’re working with and install only that manufacturer’s connectors and fittings. If you mix and match materials, you will void your warranty and may fail your inspection. You’ll end up with leaky pipes and water damage. Not all products have recognizable markings on them, so leave a few of the packaging labels on-site to appease the inspector and for future reference.

There’s no need for solder, glue or pipe wrenches—just position the crimping ring over the end of the PEX pipe, slide the pipe over the barbed fitting and use the special crimping tool to compress the ring. Just be sure to center the ring over the barb and depress the crimping tool’s handles completely.
